Insert knives with radius faces/edges are used on cutterheads that have a sheer angle on the knives designed into the cutterhead. Greater shear angles require smaller radiuses, while lesser shear angles call for larger radiuses.

Insert knives with radius corners allow the knives to tuck under the other in the overlap pattern, which helps prevent the corners from dragging, reducing the likelihood of tear-out or splintering. The radius corners also reduce the cutting force by spreading the cutting load over a larger area, creating smoother cuts that can help extend the tool life and reduce noise during cutting.
